Verizon Doubles Back on $2 “Convenience Fee”

Oh how an announced FCC inquiry changes things: After outcry began due to a planned 2 dollar “convenience fee” for certain bill payment methods, Verizon is doing an about face just days later. Verizon Wireless’ CEO Dan Mead had this to say in a statement:

“At Verizon, we take great care to listen to our customers. Based on their input, we believe the best path forward is to encourage customers to take advantage of the best and most efficient options, eliminating the need to institute the fee at this time.

Verizon says that they’ll continue to push people toward auto withdrawal, electronic checks, and paying via Verizon Wireless kiosks in store. Automatic withdraw from checking accounts is a controversial practice due to notorious errors that have resulted in consumer’s bank accounts being drained unexpectedly, and was the main reason behind the controversy surrounding the fee.
